PROJECT STORY

R.N. Conte di Cavour

The foredeck seen from abaft the bridge, which is where her officers stood.

Rebuilt 1933 to 1937: midships turret out, sixty percent of the hull replaced, 22 knots up to 28. A British torpedo bomber put her on the bottom at Taranto in November 1940. She never sailed again.

45mm · rebuilt configuration, 1937

R. Torp. P. Spica

The ship that named the class never fired a shot for Italy.

Sold to Sweden in March 1940 and renamed HSwMS Romulus. The Royal Navy interned her in the Faroes while she was still in transit. Her sisters stayed and did the fighting. Twenty-three of the thirty-two were lost.

45mm · double raised border · pennant SP

Marcantonio Bragadin

Look at the bow. That shape is a repair.

She ploughed badly on trials, so the yard bulked out the bow for buoyancy. It cost her speed and earned the class the nickname "big nose." She survived the war and was broken up in 1948.

45mm · Regia Marina crowned shield · post-1935 hull
