Warspite was a Queen Elizabeth-class battleship, launched at Devonport on 26 November 1913. Her crews called her the Grand Old Lady.
Jutland, 1916. Her steering jammed and she turned two full circles under the fire of the German battle line. She was hit about fifteen times and still made it home.
Narvik, 1940. She led nine destroyers up Ofotfjord, and all eight German destroyers there were sunk or scuttled. Her Swordfish floatplane sank the U-boat U-64.
Matapan, 1941. She was Admiral Cunningham's flagship. In a night action at under 4,000 yards, she and her sisters sank the Italian heavy cruisers Fiume and Zara. Pola was sunk later that night.
Salerno, 1943. A German Fritz X guided bomb went through her decks and flooded most of her boiler rooms. She was repaired in time to bombard the beaches on D-Day.
Front: the Important Naval History anchor. Back: Warspite's forward turrets and bridge, with JUTLAND 1916, MATAPAN 1941 and NORMANDY 1944, and THE GRAND OLD LADY below. Antique silver finish with a rope border.
These images are concept renders. The struck coin may differ in small details.
