Commander-in-Chief of Japan's Combined Fleet from 1939 to 1943. He'd studied at Harvard and served as naval attaché in Washington — he knew exactly what an American war could do. He planned the Pearl Harbor strike anyway, then told his government he could "run wild for six months" before the Pacific ran out of luck. He didn't live to see it. His plane was shot down over Bougainville on April 18, 1943, two years before Yamato sailed on her last voyage.
