Halsey ran the carrier task forces that took the war from Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay fast, aggressive, hated by his planners and loved by his crews. His aircraft from Task Force 58 found Yamato in the East China Sea on April 7, 1945, and put her on the bottom in under two hours. Five months later he stood on the deck of Missouri and watched Japan sign the surrender.
